REVIEW : Yes

Got to hand it to Neil & Chris – they sure know how to craft an incredible pOp song. Their back catalogue is smattered with so many incredible pOp gems, it’s often difficult to pick just one as a favourite. Their previous nine albums have been peppered with unforgettable pOp nuggets, but after a slight mis-step with their 2004 album ‘Release’, the boys were keen to make amends on ‘Fundamental’. Fast forward to 2009 and with their new album ‘Yes’, the Pet Shop Boys sit comfortably once again atop the global pOp ladder.
Not since 1993’s ‘Very’ have Neil & Chris come up with something so incredibly infectious, so purely targeted at their pOp fans, and they’ve done so with the help of one of the most in-demand production teams in the world in Xenomania, whose previous co-writes are with a who’s who of the pOpular music scene.
Bouncy first single “Love Etc’ gave a taster of what to expect from the new album with it’s chorus of yells and Neil’s lyrical mastery over the unmistakable electro-pOp doings of Mister Lowe.
‘All Over The World’ harks back to the boys’ most recently successful Aussie single ‘Se A Vida E’, while second single ‘Did You See Me Coming’ ups the tempo for the dancefloors and ‘Vulnerable’ catapults us back to the days of ‘Behaviour’ and it’s mega-hit ‘Being Boring’.
‘More Than A Dream’ crosses Girls Aloud’s ‘Untouchable’ with Bananarama’s ‘Look On The Floor’, while the boys again pump things up in creating a little ‘Pandemonium’, possibly the happiest, funnest pOp song in years.
If you’re looking for a hearty slice of synth-pOp goodness, you just know you’re going to need this in your collection, and even if you’re not a fan of Neil’s voice, you’ll be able to appreciate the production values and pOp sensibilities that ‘Yes’ is littered with.
