CHART WATCH

Rather a big week over on the ARIA charts this week, what with a new No.1 album and a new No.1 single. So let's get our teeth into things.

SINGLES : Australia, we have a new No.1 single - and it comes courtesy of original Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian. 'Like It Like That' seems to have found favour with Australian audiences and leapfrogs David Guetta's 'Sexy Bitch' to claim the top spot after selling 17,766 copies. That's not to say, however, that the gap between Guy and David was particularly wide - it wasn't. Had the chart be wagered with digital copies alone, David would be the victor. He sold 17,079 copies of 'Sexy Bitch' (all digitally) to drop to No.2.
Kate Miller-Heidke joins the 'over 10,000' club this week with her single 'The Last Day On Earth'. The success of the single also translating into album sales, but more about that later. 'The Last Day On Earth' sells 11,353 copies in the week to move up to No.3, overtaking Black Eyed Peas' 'I Gotta Feeling' on 10,987 copies.
Pitbull's up into the top ten with 'I Know You Want Me'. It's up five places to No.7 this week on the back of 6750 sales, while Gossip moves back into the top ten - at No.10 - with 'Heavy Cross' (4102 copies).
Lily Allen looks like she's got another hit on her hands with '22'. It rises to the unlucky No.13 place this week with 3863 sales, while Miley Cyrus' new track 'Party In The U.S.A.' debuts one place behind with 3790 copies sold.
Big slides this week from both Mika (No.10 to No.19) and Mariah (No.13 to No.21), while Jet interjects, breaking into the top 20 with 'She's A Genius' (3061 copies).
Jessica Mauboy narrowly misses out on a top 20 berth, with new single 'Up/Down' debuting at No.22 (2990 copies) while former Idol star Ricki Lee benefits from a massive number of physical sales in New South Wales and Victoria to race back up the chart to No.24 with 'Don't Miss You' (2944 copies).
Newton Faulkner's promo trip pays dividends with single 'If This Is It' debuting at No.29 (2533 copies), but Shakira's 'She Wolf' falls heavily as local radio criminally turns it's nose up at her.
Further down, debuts for The Script ('Before The Worst' at No.45 - 1648 sales), Dizzee Rascal ('Holiday' at No.49 - 1573 copies) and Black Eyed Peas ('Meet Me Halfway' at No.50 - 1548 copies).
Outside the top 50, Boys Like Girls edge closer to a top 50 berth with 'Love Drunk' (up to No.54 this week on the back of 1435 sales), Newton Faulkner's 'Dream Catch Me' re-emerges at No.55 and Paramore's 'Ignorance' bullets to No.57.
Another slice of David Guetta's album, 'On The Dancefloor' makes it into the No.62 position (1239 copies) and Wolfmother debuts at No.67 with 'New Moon Rising' (1098 copies).

ALBUMS : It'll be smiles all 'round at Liberation headquarters in Melbourne this morning with iconic Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes bagging the coveted No.1 position. In doing so, he breaks a record - he's the only Australian solo star to have ever topped the charts NINE times (that means something altogether different for Ferris Bueller fans). As a solo performer, he now shares the nine time honour only with Madonna. Jimmy's album 'The Rhythm And The Blues' sold 13,572 copies last week to grab the top spot from the Black Eyed Peas, who are relegated to second with 7253 copies sold.
Kate Miller-Heidke's 'Curiouser' is now a bonafide hit - and all thanks to Neighbours. 5403 copies of Kate's album passed the sales post last week to give it it's highest position on the charts to date.
David Guetta's album 'One Love' debuts at a respectable No.7 (4360 copies), while John Farnham's 'The Essential 3.0' edges ever closer to the top 10 with 3769 copies sold (pre-Father's Day sales and his tour helping the sales tick over).
There are a few definite Father's Day movers this week - Neil Diamond's 'Hot August Night NYC' moves from No.37 to No.21, Slim Dusty's '80 Truckin Classics' moves from No.36 to No.22, Melody Gardot's 'My One And Only Thrill' moves from No.28 to No.23 and Patrizio Buanne's self-titled new album debuts at No.24 (2068 copies sold in it's first week).
Short Stack's album debuted at No.1 just two weeks ago - it's now down to No.27 with 2041 copies sold in the week.
Bloody Beetroots debuts at No.31 with 'Romborama' (1868 copies) and Kisschasy's album 'Seizures' has suffered just that - plummeting 26 places in just it's second week on sale. It's at No.41 this week (1437 copies).
Outside the top 50, local hip-hop artist Urthboy bullets into the No.54 position with his new album 'Spitshine' (1022 copies), Newton Faulkner finds favour with his previous album 'Hand Built By Robots' (re-emerging at No.57 with 965 copies) and Colbie Caillat debuts at No.59 with new album 'Breakthrough' (886 copies).
Further down, Willie Nelson's 'American Classic' debuts at No.65 (738 copies) and Sia's back in the charts at No.80.

what about Alesha Dixon and her sales last week and a total also please and thankyou

Anonymous said...

Thanks AuspOp. So what was the breakup of digital and physical with Like It Like That, please?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for Jessica Mauboy's sales.
Just wondering how many did Rickie-Lee sell in physical downloads?

Tim said...

Thanks again AuspOp! I can't get enough of your Chart Watch!

auspOp said...

One for Anonymous #1...

Alesha Dixon sold 5953 copies of 'The Boy Does Nothing' this week - it's highest weekly total to date. And since it's debut it's sold 26,281 copies. A couple more weeks of these kind of sales figures and it should have a gold accreditation.

And for Anonymous #2...

Guy sold 1524 physical copies of 'Like It Like That' this week. They're included in the final figure of 17,766 copies.

auspOp said...

And for Anonymous #3 (gosh, all so secretive today!)...

Ricki Lee sold 1815 physical singles in the last week.
If Ricki hadn't had a physical single selling, 'Don't Miss You' would be sitting at No.66 on this week's chart.

Another anonymous AuspOp. But you can call me #4 for short. Do you have any idea why Sexy Bitch came in front of Like It Like That in digital downloads? On all the major download sites last week Like It Like That was sitting at #1for the whole of the ARIA week, and yet came in at #2 on the Aria digital download chart. And also LILT's second entry in the itunes top 300(the EP LILT) was way higher than David's mix of Sexy Bitch. Video the same. Guy in front. Only thing I can come up with is ringtones. Top download lists for them are hard to find. Could that have been the reason? You may not have any idea why, but it has been bugging me since the ARIA site was updated last night. Seems odd.

And here is another one. As close to 50,000 people have jumped in to LILT in its 1st four weeks on the charts, do you think it is time for that promised review of the album? Lots of fans are hanging out for it.

auspOp said...

Hey there #4 for short,

ARIA's official stats reveal that Sexy Bitch sold way more digital copies than Like It Like That, putting it plainly.
David Guetta sold 17,079 digital downloads in the last week, while Guy notched up 16,242 digital downloads.
It can be through so many different sites these days too - from the Sony Music digital site BanditFM through to EMI's '7Digital' site, Bigpond, iTunes - anywhere really!
So all up, it was David who pipped Guy at the digital post.

As for that album review... We're not allowed to publish just yet. But it's a pretty decent offering. We LOVE 'All To Myself'.

Also on Guy cant wait for the album I also love All to myself,
plus adore never hold you down, attention etc plenty of more single choices, should be fantastic!!

anyhow thanks as always your site is a must read!!

cant wait to see robbie williams impact on the charts once official release date rolls around

#4 here again AuspOp. I know there are lots of sites. But Guy was #1 on banditfm and Bigpond for the whole of the Aria week as well, not just itunes. Which seem to be the big 3In fact he has been #1 on Itunes and Bandit for 2 weeks straight now. We keep a constant watch. No one has been past him on those two sites for 14 days. And this is the beginning of the second week he has been at #1 on Bigpond. Must have been some of the smaller sites that the 800 or so difference was made.

I love All To Myself too and it may be the next single from what we hear. "Pretty decent offering" from the songs I have heard is a little underdone for me. But everyone has their own opinion I suppose. Will be interesting to see what other reviewers say. The reviews for The Memphis Album were simply stunning both here and overseas. But I guess you may have not ever have listened to that one being a covers album.

also well done Jimmy!!

Great to see Jimmy in at #1 again, its been a while!
Thanks for the figures Auspop x

Annon #4! I completely see where you're coming from, and I'm also really disappointed that Guy's lead wasn't bigger than it was. However, what everyone is forgetting, is that "Sexy B**ch" has over 10 remixes on iTunes that COUNTS towards ARIA!! Not all remixes count, but most do.. We've seen this with so many other big hits lately, like "Boom Boom Pow" and "Paparazzi".

hi auspop!

What's Mika sales for this week ?

Thanks auspOp for the chart watch and the sales.

Anonymous said...

Hi auspOp! I'm Cartone, but I can't get my account to work, hence the anonymous post...!

As always, thanks for the figures! Do you have any for Madonna this week? Her video premiered too late last week to make much of an impact, although it was #1 for several days in the current charting week, so it should give the single a boost on the charts next week. I really don't understand why radio isn't giving this more support - it's a great pop song! Anyway, any info on its sales this week would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

auspOp said...

One for PP13!

Mika sold 3251 copies this week, just four copies behind Taylor Swift in No.18.

And for Cartone,

Madonna's 'Celebration' (in No.84 for the second week) and it's sold another 824 copies.

Et voila!

Hi AuspOp!

Thanks for all these sales figures again. I wanted to know total sales of 'Jai Ho' and how many units 'The Fear' (Lily Allen) has sold since March 23rd. Thanks in advance.

auspOp said...

Hola Innocent Eyes,

Lily Allen's 'The Fear' finally dropped out of the top 100 two weeks ago. In between March 23 and then, it had sold 56,847 copies.

Pussycat Dolls' 'Jai Ho' (which debuted on March 23) has since sold 123,560 copies.

Hi Auspop. Do the people who are given albums to review give any feedback to record companies about which songs ought to be singles?

Re the Guy album, have to agree on All To Myself. But only a few of the tracks exist in any recorded form prior to the album, and the album edits might be a bit different. There was a sampler on youtube for a little while, illegally. From that, Art of Love and Attention are sounding pretty good too.

Thanks
Tricia

Just on what Tim said...
"Sexy B**ch" has over 10 remixes on iTunes that COUNTS towards ARIA!! Not all remixes count, but most do.. We've seen this with so many other big hits lately, like "Boom Boom Pow" and "Paparazzi".

Thats UNREAL!!! no wonder its so hard for a song to go #1 these days

Tim said...

Completely agree Bek! It's making it easier for record companies to manipulate the charts!

#4 said...

Wow Tim. Thanks for that. It kind of helps solve my puzzlement. I had seen one mix of Sexy Bitch in the top 300 in the itunes generator, but didn't realise there were others. I guess even if they are not getting enough downloads to get into the itunes chart proper they may still be getting enough sales to impact on the ARIA digital chart with so many of them. Is it any wonder so few Aussies get to the top of the ARIA singles charts these days. And Guy's mix was meant to go onto itunes and last time I looked it was still not listed in his songs. I am hoping Guy will mantain his #1 on the ARIA chart this week but it may depend on whether his physical sales can keep up.

Hello!

Is it possible to get some Taylor Swift total singles and albums sales please?

auspOp said...

Hi Anonymous #6!

Taylor Swift stats for you;

'Love Story' (since March 23) has sold 147,899 (just over double platinum).

'You Belong With Me' (since debuting at No.84 on May 04) has sold 80,308 copies.

And her album 'Fearless' (since March 23) has bagged 127,932 copies.
