SHORT STACK : Ladies And Gentlemen

The boys from Budgewoi are back with the fourth single from their blistering debut album 'Stack Is The New Black'. And once again, it's all high-energy pop/rock here and a rather slick and polished looking video to go with it. The boys meanders into a hospital emergency ward looking sharp as always, but you can tell that something's just not quite right. Andy's got some strange scar on his face, Bradie's got some kind of injury on his temple and Shaun's got a cut on his cheek and big hair, though the latter is pretty much a formality. To be honest, we haven't the foggiest what's going on in that there hospital, but it looks great.

LADYHAWKE : Magic

Salvation! One of our favourite songs from the Pip Brown's spectacular debut album has finally been given a single release - and they've even popped together a rather fetching video clip to accompany it. So Ladyhawke is gazing into her crystal ball, forseeing more spectacular success ahead, no doubt, when all of a sudden, she's taken by the sight of a man being held hostage by pirates. (We assume they're pirates, 'cause there are eyepatches involved, but nary a parrot to be seen). She meanders through the bat-infested forest before stumbling upon a white horse. Naturally it's completely tame and takes her to the waters edge. She then hops on a suspiciously stiff looking magic carpet and flies over the seas (the Atlantic, presumably). But does she get there in time to rescue him? Watch and see. Following on from every clip from this album, 'Magic' is another altogether spectacular extravaganza.

TOURING : Patrizio Buanne

It's been a couple of years since handsome Italian crooner Patrizio Buanne last toured Australian shores, but with his new album 'Patrizio' (pictured) now in the shops, Dainty Consolidated Entertainment has just announced that he'll be heading back down under in May 2010 for another series of live shows.
All five major centres will get to see the singer live, with the concert series kicking off in Adelaide on May 16.
Tickets for all dates will go on sale on Thursday October 15.

May 16 : Adelaide (Festival Theatre)
May 19 : Perth (Burswood Theatre)
May 23 : Sydney (State Theatre)
May 28 : Brisbane (Convention Centre)
May 30 : Melbourne (Hamer Hall)

INTERVIEW : Ryan Meeking

A warning to the United States of America. A wannabe stalker is about to head to your shores. Armed with an alias and a swag of great music, this young man told us that when it comes to stalking he’d want to “do it right”.
Noodles Romanoff (real name Ryan Meeking) grew up in Kyabram in country Victoria, forever dreaming of getting out of the small town (population 7000) and conquering the world.
Six years later, with the help of ‘a few’ friends, Ryan Meeking has dropped the alias, is living large in the big smoke and has just released his debut major label EP “Night Owls”.
And he finds it refreshing that despite his mum’s best efforts to bolster her son’s profile through the local newspaper, he’s still relatively unknown in Kyabram.
“Nobody knows me – it’s weird,” he says, “It’s like a generational thing. I’m in that gap now where none of the younger people know me and none of the older people know me. It’s like being in a familiar place but everybody else is different. It’s kind of like Sliders. Remember that show? They had a remote control and they’d go into alternate realities. It’s kinda like that almost, but a little less sci-fi.”
But surely that anonymity must be fast disappearing as the Ryan Meeking and The Few star continues to rise?
“I don’t know if I’ll ever be avoiding supermarkets. I reckon Kyabram will be a safe haven, unless it’s like an Elvis thing where they bury me there, so I don’t know. I haven’t got as far as my death yet,” he says.

Ryan Meeking and The Few (that's them in the happy snap above) came about after the demise of the singer’s previous band, the curiously named “Noodles Romanoff and The Flustered Peacocks”.
“We could have been something,” he laughs, “We had a line-up that included piano and trumpet and a whole lot of odd things. For the time when everybody else was playing SKA or punk or something, we were playing whatever the hell we were playing.
“So before we even played any music we had an idea that we would be called The Flustered Peacocks. I wasn’t part of that – I don’t know how the other guys figured it out. Then we got new members and for some reason we were right into Roger Ramjet. Noodles Romanoff is the name of the bad guy and it’s Noodles Romanoff and his band of no-goods or something like that. We were very random people.”

After the untimely demise of the first band (though we tell him ‘Noodles Romanoff’ is a great alias to check into hotels under when he becomes really famous), Ryan sang some obligatory covers, before getting together with a couple of mates to try and come up with a name for what would ultimately become Ryan Meeking and The Few.
“It was kind of an arbitrary name that we just slapped on there after we wrote out a hundred different things it could be. The first name we had was ‘The Better Health’. Ryan Meeking and The Better Health. And then people just kept screwing it up – it was like ‘Ryan Meeking and the Boota Half’ or some crap like that on a board out the front of a venue, so we thought ‘we need to make this shorter’.” he says.

After hypnotising Warner Music’s Michael Parisi with his wares, Ryan played his music to a series of record company types who all decided that it would be indeed wonderful to give the boy a recording deal.
With the band’s sound shifting ever so slightly in direction between their first (unsigned) EP and a forthcoming album, and with a few new tracks already in the bag, it was decided to release the ‘Night Owl’ EP.
“We did it because we needed to get music out there now. We hadn’t recorded for about two years before it and we were kind of handing over our old CD shielding our faces going “I’m sorry, it’s not really us”, because so much can happen in two years.
“I’m hoping what the EP does is not only provide an example of where we’re at now, but it’s a kind of a bit of a gateway into our album. It’s like the marijuana of music progression. It’s a gateway drug into the album. Then we can push the heavy shit,” he laughs.

The five track EP opens with ‘Morning Bird’, a peppy, feel-good song written with the assistance of an owl that perched itself outside Ryan’s window on a recent trip to the UK. 'Thunder Without The Storm' is stripped-back, intimate and sublime, with a hidden instrumental leading into the laid back summery vibe of 'She Said'.

Vocally, he’s been compared to the late, great Jeff Buckley, one of Ryan’s early musical heroes, and when listening to the disc, it’s easy to understand why those comparisons are made.

“Well I take that as a huge compliment, because he was my hero. I think when my voice was developing, I listened to a heap of him, so I kind of kept that feel in my voice,” he says, adding that there have been other musical influences along the way, “Back in the day the Red Hot Chili Peppers were the first band I really heard and went ‘whoa! Music can do THAT!?’. ‘One Hot Minute’ was a fantastic album. I think later on in life The Shins – there’s been another moment where I’ve again gone ‘music can do THAT!?’, so every now and then I’m really surprised and I never stop getting new idols that I desperately want to chase.”

“Does this mean you’re becoming a stalker?” we ask.

“Oh not quite – not yet, but maybe when I … Wait ‘til I’m in the US,” he replies.

We enquire who’d be first on the stalking hit list and whether or not there’s anyone in particular we should be warning ahead of time.

“Yeah we probably should actually – I don’t know. It’d feel kind of useless not stalking a girl. If I was going to be a stalker, I’d do it right.”

America, you have been warned.

Along with an uncanny knack for sounding like Jeff Buckley, Ryan seems to have developed another unique talent – the ability to silence an audience. While most pub gigs involve drunkards paying no respect to those on stage by drinking, chatting loudly and even answering their phones, Ryan’s audience seems to be defying that trend.
“What seems to be happening now is that we seem to be recruiting people who actually care about the music. Gigs that we played recently like The Palais in Melbourne (which was fucking amazing) and The State Theatre in Sydney where the audience is there to just listen to the music , not to get wasted and hear some background music.
“We had a review once written about a show we did a year ago and the person was pretty much the whole time bagging the crowd saying it was the most ridiculous thing they’d ever seen, so loud and the most amazing music. They were really ropable with the crowd.”

But it was one recent gig at Melbourne’s iconic Esplanade Hotel where Ryan was himself silenced.
“We had a bunch of people rock up on Saturday night when we played the Espy and they rocked up to the front of the stage – it was crazy – and started yelling out the songs that Noodles Romanoff played back in the day and I’ve never had that. I was like “WHO ARE YOU!?”.

It seems Ryan Meeking (AKA Noodles Romanoff) might not be the only stalker in the world after all.

The Night Owl EP is out now through Warner Music.
Ryan Meeking and The Few’s debut album is due in 2010.
The band plays the National Hotel in Geelong on October 08 and Jive Bar in Adelaide on October 09. More tour details on the OFFICIAL MYSPACE.

TOURING : Taylor Swift

Rising country music poppet Taylor Swift has been experiencing an incredible level of success here in Australia with her singles 'You Belong With Me' and 'Love Story' and her album 'Fearless'. But with new single 'Fifteen' now at radio and a repackage of her album due in early November, the timing couldn't be more right for Michael Coppel to announce a national tour. The 19 year old songstress will hit our shores in February next year for a series of arena shows, taking in Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Tickets for all dates are on sale on Thursday October 15.

February 04 : Brisbane (Entertainment Centre)
February 06 : Sydney (Acer Arena)
February 08 : Newcastle (Entertainment Centre)
February 10 : Melbourne (Rod Laver Arena)
February 12 : Adelaide (Entertainment Centre)

TENAGLIA ADDED TO SUMMADAYZE

It's been more than a decade since respected US house DJ Danny Tenaglia last toured Australia, but Future Entertainment has literally just announced that he's heading back down under as part of the 2010 Summadayze Festivals. He's apparently renowned for turning down touring offers, so the Danny Tenaglia tour announcement is seen as somewhat of a coup for Summadayze organisers.
But the catch is that Danny is only appearing at three of the Summadayze dates. He'll appear at the Melbourne event on January 01, the Perth event on January 03 and the Gold Coast's Summafieldayze event on January 09.
Tickets for all Summadayze dates are on sale now.

NEWS WRAP

* British girl group The Saturdays, who'll see their new album 'Wordshaker' released in Britain in October, are also set to see some digital release action here in Australia. But don't get too excited - it's not the new album. The tracks 'Chasing Lights', 'Issues' and 'Beggin'' (the latter the 'Issues' b-side) all look set to be released to digital retail on October 16.
* Touring agent Michael Coppel has announced a change in date for the Pixies' 2010 Aussie tour - and it affects Adelaide. The band's show at the Thebarton Theatre on March 24 has been changed to March 25. It's all apparently to accommodate the demand for tickets in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
* The gang at Neon is now celebrating a top 40 hit for Swedish songstress Agnes. But even though the story for 'Release Me' now seems far from over, they're already busily planning the Aussie release of the next single 'Need You Now'.
* Organisers of Phillip Island's Pyramid Rock Festival in Victoria must've jumped the gun a bit on Monday 'cause they've also announced that Scottish outfit Biffy Clyro have also been added to the bill for the Dec 29 - January 01 event.
* One of our auspOp favourites Kate Vigo is setting off on a little national tour. She'll be playing a number of dates in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane, kicking off this Friday at Cafe Komodo in Prospect, South Australia. All dates are up on Kate's OFFICIAL WEBSITE.
* And in the world of Twitter, the Freemasons report that Elton John snapped up 35 copies of their recent album 'Shakedown 2' to give to his friends, Calvin Harris is eating green eggs and ham (that, or he's been reading one too many Doctor Seuss books) and Cassie Davis is getting worked up for her appearance on the Hey Hey It's Saturday reunion show (tonight at 7:30 on the Nine Network).

NAME THE PET : Get On The Bus

We must admit that our delve into the world of Swedish pop this morning was triggered by the new video for Swedish songstress Name The Pet. And though we've been trying desperately to get more information on her, alas, we can't find it. So the single 'Get On The Bus' is a dance/pop number, which would sit rather well either on the dancefloors or on the wireless and it has a stylish-ass video to match. Through subtle use of colours and black and white imagery, the clip is emblazoned upon your senses. Oooh, that's waaaay too big a word for us to be using in the middle of the night...

THE SOUND OF ARROWS : Into The Clouds

So you know how we think that Swedish music is bloody brilliant (when has it ever not been)...? Well this new single by Stockholm duo The Sound Of Arrows is something rather special. It's epic, it's electro, it's lush, it's orchestral, it's familiar but it's new and it's rocking our world. And if you're liking the stuff Empire Of The Sun's been doing with their clips and sound, you're bound to love The Sound Of Arrows.
The video's bright, striking, colourful and bold. It's quite simply one of the most amazing pieces of pop music we've heard all year. Check Oscar and Stefan out at their OFFICIAL MYSPACE, or grab hold of the track now at iTunes throughout the world.

AN MJ UPDATE

Further to our story over the weekend with regards the release of the Michael Jackson 'This Is It' DVD... It would appear our Sony contact mis-interpreted our question of "when will the DVD be released?". It's the CD, NOT the DVD of 'This Is It' that will be released into Australian stores on October 26.
The two disc set will feature music inspired by the documentary detailing the rehearsals for what was to be Michael's last ever concert series, arranged in the order in which they appear in the film.
But the exciting news is that a brand new Michael Jackson track, also entitled 'This Is It', will be released on Tuesday October 13 - the first new material to be released since the King Of Pop's untimely death back in June.
Two version of this song will be made available on the 'This Is It' 2CD set, with a spoken word poem ('Planet Earth'), also previously unreleased, featured on the second disc.

BRITNEY TIMES THREE

The cover has been lifted off the new Britney Spears single '3' - the new track lifted from her forthcoming greatest hits set. The new song has been produced by long-time Spears collaborator Max Martin and is the only new track to be featured on the new best-of. It's set to hit Australian radio next Tuesday with the new 'Singles Collection' due for release locally on November 20.

INTRODUCING MEDINA

This young lady has already been experiencing chart success in her homeland of Denmark with her single 'You And I'. But it seems that on the other side of the world, Australians are also beginning to fall for the charms of Danish singer Medina through the Deadmau5 remix of 'You And I'. It's already making it's presence felt in the ARIA club chart and after just four weeks in, it's already moved up to a very tidy No.6.
On the back of the track's club success, EMI has taken the single 'You And I' to radio this week to see if they can get it to cross over. In the meantime, why not stop by Medina's OFFICIAL MYSPACE, no English language track to speak of, but we do like the groove of 'Velkommen Til Medina'.

OH CHRISTMAS TORI

Universal Music Australia has revealed details of the forthcoming Tori Amos Christmas album 'Midwinter Graces'. And from what we can ascertain from the media release, this album's been a long time in the making. The story goes that Tori used to play Christmas Carols in her father's church back in Baltimore and so releasing a Christmas album is a childhood dream of sorts. The 12 track album (tracklisting below) features a number of seasonal favourites as well as a smattering of original tracks like 'Pink And Glitter' and will be released in Australia on November 06.

01. What Child, Nowell
02. Star Of Wonder
03. A Silent Night With You
04. Candle: Coventry Carol
05. Holly, Ivy And Rose
06. Harps Of Gold
07. Snow Angel
08. Jeanette, Isabella
09. Pink And Glitter
10. Emmanuel
11. Winter's Carol
12. Our New Year

JESSICA MAUBOY : Up/Down

We simply cannot believe that we've been so amiss as to not post the video clip for Jessica Mauboy's latest single 'Up/Down'. From what we've heard it won't be the last single to be lifted from her album 'Been Waiting' either. The thing we love about Jess is the transition she's made from video clip No.1 to video clip No.5. In 'Running Back', she seemed a little shy and awkward in front of the camera. In 'Up/Down', she comes alive, pouting to and working with the camera to maximum effect - and she seems to have lost all the nerves that once plagued her. Fun, bright, colourful clip that pushes all the right buttons. So forgive us for not posting sooner, but she's looking hot.

NAT'S AUSSIE RELEASE TO GO AHEAD?

Natalie Imbruglia has delayed the release of her new album 'Come To Life' until February 2010. But is that just in the UK? Natalie recently amended the release date for 'Come To Life' on her official website, but from what we can ascertain from Universal Music locally, her album is still set for an October 09 release here. This would also seem to be the case when the album is still available for pre-order from all the major online music retailers just eleven days before the planned instore date.
The album's first single 'Want' made it's iTunes debut on Friday last week and there's a remix bundle slated to hit iTunes this Friday. We'll keep you posted on any developments, but it seems for the moment that 'Come To Life' will indeed hit retail in Australia four months ahead of Britain.

PYRAMID'S SECOND LINE-UP

We'd been told that the second line-up announcement for the Pyramid Rock Festival on Phillip Island in Victoria was to arrive on Wednesday, but organisers have sent out details this morning. Adding to the already impressive line-up (including Empire Of The Sun and The Cat Empire) are Cat Power, Grinspoon, British India, Amp Fiddler, Krafty Kuts, Clare Bowditch, Red Riders, Sugar Army, Diafrix and many, many more.
As mentioned over the weekend, three days passes for the annual event have already sold out, with two days passes looking to follow suit within the coming days.
Head to the PYRAMID ROCK WEBSITE for more information.

CHART WATCH

While our number one single stays the same for a second week, we have a new number one album - but if you think rock gods Pearl Jam would eclipse the sales success of last week's No.1 from Muse, think again.

SINGLES : David Guetta remains in the top spot for another week, after reclaiming the lead last week from Guy Sebastian (who remains at No.2). 'Sexy Bitch' sells a further 17,271 copies this week, with Guy some 2999 copies behind.
Kate Miller-Heidke's still selling more than 10,000 units of 'The Last Day On Earth' each week (10,423 to be precise), while Cascada's 'Evacuate The Dancefloor' in No.4 sells just a bee's dick less (9995 copies).
The cast of Glee shook things up on Aussie shores last week and rockets 16 places up the chart this week to No.5 with 'Don't Stop Believin'' selling 9304 copies for the week. The rest of the top ten remains relatively unchanged.
Beyonce's on our shores and her singles all do well this week - she has three singles within the Aussie top 20 ('Sweet Dreams' at No.12 - 4787 sales, 'Broken Hearted Girl' at No.15 - 3558 sales and 'Single Ladies' at No.16 - 3515 sales), the latter of which leapt an incredible 25 places.
Pearl Jam's 'The Fixer' makes a jump from No.35 to No.22 (2959 copies), Swedish poppet Agnes' single 'Release Me' finally cracks the top 50 - at No.31 with 2469 copies, while Newton Faulkner also makes his way higher - up 14 places to No.36 with 'If This Is It' (2089 copies).
Dizzee Rascal's back in at No.42 with 'Holiday' (1695 sales) and 3OH!3 have another top 50 hit on their hands with a little help from Katy Perry ('Starstruckk' debuting at No.44 with 1666 sales).
Outside the top 50, Jordin Sparks scores another top 100 hit with 'S.O.S. (Let The Music Play)' debuting in the No.54 position with 1358 sales.
Patrick Swayze's death had an effect on sales of the Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes classic '(I've Had) The Time Of My Life' - it makes a 'debut' on the ARIA chart at No.63 (1165 sales), while Wes Carr's new single 'Love Is An Animal' comes in at No.65 with 1148 sales.
Eva Simons' track 'Silly Boy' is on the move upwards - placing 22 spots higher this week at No.66 (1142 sales), Michael Buble debuts at No.67 with 'Haven't Met You Yet' (1127 sales), one place higher than the new Mariah Carey track 'I Want To Know What Love Is' (No.68 with 1120 sales).
Liam Finn and Eliza Jane are in at No.75 with 'Champagne In Seashells' (968 sales), MKF debut at No.76 with 'Like The River' (954 sales) and the Glee Cast get some more love with their cover of Amy Winehouse's 'Rehab' debuting at No.93 (751 copies).

ALBUMS : Pearl Jam score a convincing No.1 album this week with their new long player 'Backspacer' debuting in the top spot. But while Muse's first week figures last week easily cracked the 20,000 mark, Pearl Jam have to settle for 19,294 copies.
Muse drops down to No.2 with 'The Resistance' (12,569 sales), Beyonce's on our shores and therefore her 'I Am... Sasha Fierce' set moves back up the chart to No.3 (6812 sales) and Newton Faulkner's new album 'Rebuilt By Humans' makes an impressive debut at No.5 (6510 copies).
Madonna's best-of 'Celebration' debuts at No.8 with 4881 copies sold and Mika debuts at No.10 with 'The Boy Who Knew Too Much' selling 3579 copies.
Further down, La Roux's back in the top 30 - at No.29 (1580 copies), Megadeth drops 20 spots (No.31 with 'Endgame' - 1517 sales) and there's a debut at No.37 for Bluejuice ('Head Of The Hawk' - 1402 sales) and No.38 for the Packed To The Rafters soundtrack (1268 sales).
Packed To The Rafters isn't the only soundtrack debuting this week either - the 500 Days Of Summer soundtrack is in at No.46 with 1126 sales.
Ben Harper and Relentless7 race back into the top 100 at No.54 with 'White Lies For Dark Times' (1006 sales), Basement Jaxx debut at No.76 with 'Scars' (696 sales), Three Days Grace pops in at No.77 with 'Life Starts Now' (681 sales) and the 1927 best-of '...Ish' is in at No.78 (674 sales).
Kid Cudi debuts at No.85 with 'Man On The Moon : The End Of Day' (609 copies), Monsters Of Folk debut at No.91 with their self-titled album (593 copies) and Cliff Richard & The Shadows' 'Reunited' set is in at No.93 (576 copies).

OFFICIAL ARIA CHARTS

SARAKULA FLIES THE COOP

Just as we're doing a little article to introduce you to the delights of Sydney artist Joel Sarakula, he's buggered off to England to play a series of live shows. And it's the live circuit where most people have been developing a love for Joel's piano-infused pop music. He's recently supported Bob Evans on his Aussie tour and has been playing live shows across the country, in the US and UK. In fact, Joel's affinity with the piano is so great, he's earned himself a reputation as a 'piano man' (just don't ask him to play the Billy Joel number of the same name).
On the recorded music side of things, his new album 'City Heart' is out now, and fans can get a taster of the new material with his latest single 'Caught In The Middle' which is available from iTunes HERE.
So while Sarakula tours British shores for the next month or so, Aussie fans will have to make do with sampling his music at his OFFICIAL MYSPACE or snapping it up over at iTunes.

KE$HA : Tik Tok

We gave you a little heads-up about six weeks ago about the new song by former Flo Rida collaborator Ke$ha (she guested on his No.1 single 'Right Round'). But the sassy 22 year old from Nashville, Tennessee is primed for another big hit with her debut solo single 'TiK ToK' ready to be taken to Australian radio. The video for the clip has just broken too, so we felt it our duty to plop it on up so you can have a guernsey.
Waking up in the bathtub, lil' Ke$ha gets some gear on, pops downstairs where's a short stack (not the band) waiting on her. Sadly, it goes all over the floor at the sight of her and she pops on down the street on possible the most glamorous piece of cycling kit you've ever clapped eyes on. And she seems quite content with her golden bicycle 'til a yob comes along with a golden Trans Am and takes her for a ride. In the grand scheme of things, there ought to be a big golden jet coming next, right? But instead, she takes a detour to shimmy on down to the dancefloor. Insanely catch - and should be a big big hit.

PARRALOX : Hotter

Slowly but surely over the past couple of years, Aussie duo Parralox has been hypnotising the world with their good grooves and pop sensibilities. Popjustice loves them. So too does Perez Hilton. And (not wishing to jump on the bandwagon here or anything), so do we. John Von Ahlen has been producing pop in Australia for goodness knows how long, in the past working with the likes of Delta Goodrem, Olivia Newton-John, Real Life and even Gina G. Teaming up with young Amii, he's crafting pop that's international, slick and very very addictive.
And Parralox is about to release a brand new EP - 'Hotter'. When we say 'EP', they're putting some of today's albums to shame, with the CD variant containing an incredible 12 tracks! TWELVE! There are seven remixes of the title track and five other songs that will only be released on the CD variant. Head to iTunes HERE to preview the digital version. Both are set for release on October 09. Parralox - remember their name, 'cause fame beckons.

INTRODUCING CARMEN REECE

There's no sign of a Carmen Reece release on the horizon in Australia just yet, but over in the US, the London-born artist is already starting to experience the spoils of success. Her single 'Right Here' is continuing it's march up the Billboard club chart, she's working with some of the best in the business (producer Mark Feist, who's worked with Celine and Beyonce is on board) and her debut album is just about in the can.
And combining good looks with a killer voice and natural musical ability (she plays piano and flute), big things seem certain for Carmen Reece. Watch this space.

STEVE ANGELLO & LAIDBACK LUKE FTG. ROBIN S : Show Me Love

So Robin S had a big hit with 'Show Me Love' back in 1993. Not only did it grace club charts the world over, but it also became a mainstream hit in a number of countries. But the number of times it's been re-released since then... well there was the 1997 remix (perhaps a bit premature), but then came '99, 2002 and now 2009, with a little help from Steve Angello and Laidback Luke.
And while the video clip for the single is simple enough in it's makeup, it's extra-stylish and most eye-catching, even if it does tread where pretty much 80% of all other dance videos go to get noticed - scantily clad women.

ANASTACIA : I'm Outta Love

We don't quite know what happened to the Anastacia juggernaut - just a few years back, she was hitting the top of the charts the world over with songs like this, her debut single. Then, with her last album 'Heavy Rotation', things started to go decidedly awry. The lead single, the catchy 'I Can Feel You', failed to chart higher than No.20 anywhere in the world and the album, despite placing top five in a few countries (Spain, Russia, Switzerland) sank like a stone.
Who knows what it was that first endeared us to Anastacia, but her debut single 'I'm Outta Love' hit the No.1 spot on the Aussie charts nine years ago. She was sexy, sassy, wore dark glasses (so we knew she was mysterious and all), looked like she was oodles of fun, knew how to shake it and had that massive voice.
So all we can see that's changed is that she no longer wears the glasses. Perhaps that's where she's left all her pop powers.
We still love her.

CAMP MUCH?

Friends of the site emailed us this little video link the other day and we thought we had to share. Three iconic divas - Anastacia, Chaka Khan and Lulu - will be touring the United Kingdom from late November in a show called 'Here Come The Girls'. And it looks set to be hairspray, false eyelashes, big heels and big voices at thirty paces. In interviews the girls have done to promote the show, they've hinted they make even take it beyond UK shores in the future, but no word on whether Australia would be on the horizon. Now we're reminiscing about Anastacia, cue this afternoon's lookback segment.

SATURDAY NEWS WRAP #01

* Sony Music has confirmed to us that Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' DVD will be given an Australian release on Saturday October 26. The DVD will feature footage of rehearsals for Michael's 'This Is It' concerts, scheduled to go ahead in London before the singer's untimely death in June.
* Speaking of Sony, they've announced that the new Britney Spears best-of 'The Singles Collection' will hit Australian stores on Friday November 20. Two versions of the collection will be made available - a CD/DVD version and a limited edition fan box set containing all 29 singles in individual sleeves with b-sides. A new single, '3', produced by Max Martin, is due to hit Australian radio on Tuesday October 06.
* US outfit Yacht, announced as part of the Meredith Music Festival line-up, will play three extra shows while they're in the country, treating audiences to their intriguing blend of pop in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. They play Revolver in Melbourne on December 13, the Oxford Art Factory in Sydney on December 15 and the Brisbane Powerhouse on December 16, with all tix on sale on October 02.
* The countdown is on to Victoria's iconic new years eve Pyramid Rock Festival on Phillip Island. Three day passes for the event have already sold out, while two day passes are well on their way. Organisers will reveal the second line-up of guests this Wednesday.
* And still in Victoria, the Solar Music Festival will return for a second big event at the Mornington Racecourse, south of Melbourne on Sunday January 03. No word yet on a line-up.
* If reports out of the UK are to be believed, former Sugababe Keisha gave management an ultimatum - either Amelle goes or I go. It kinda backfired. Meanwhile, out Sugababes debate continues over in the right hand column. Should they stay or should they go?
* And in the world of Twitter, Kate Havnevik is driving to Minneapolis, Gin WIgmore appears to have an album-in-the-shops hangover, Mika' s a fan of Snickers bars and Miley Cyrus has been eating corn dogs.

(Good luck to Melbourne and Brisbane tonight and to Geelong and St.Kilda in about five minutes' time - may the best teams win).

It's been a desperately long time coming, but Dame Shirley Bassey is about to release a brand new studio album. More than two decades after her last studio album of originals, 'The Performance' will be released in Australia through Universal Music in mid-November.

The 11 track album is set to hit retail on Friday November 13.

A NEON TASTER

Looky here! It's the stars of the forthcoming Neon Essentials Volume 2 compilation. From left, that's Grant Smillie, that's Ruby Rose and that's Don Diablo, each of whom have their very own disc in the forthcoming three CD set from boutique Aussie dance label Neon.
The gang from Neon have put together this rather scrumptious little six minute video taster of what to expect from Don's disc when the album hits the shops on October 16. Smooth!

BERTIE BLACKMAN : Byrds Of Prey

If we can be so blunt as to say the video to the first single from Bertie Blackman's new album 'Secrets And Lies' ('Heart') scared the crap out of us. The second video (for 'Thump') was rather brilliant. And now Ms Blackman has revealed the video for the album's third single, 'Byrds Of Prey'. A lone cyclist is zipping through the woods when all of a sudden she spies something moving in the bushes. Of course, we're privy to the knowledge that it's actually Bertie with impossibly long eyelashes hiding in the shadows and a host of her scantily clad friends. Just as we think the young lass is to make it out of the forest unscathed, we suddenly realise it's actually dropped dark and the creatures make their move. What happens to her? You'll have to watch and see for yourself, but 'Byrds Of Prey' is another fine example of forward-thinking, catchy, clever Aussie pop.

CD SINGLE STOCKISTS (UPDATE)

Back at the end of July, we reacted to the news that JB Hifi was no longer to stock the physical CD single format by compiling a list (with plenty of help from you) of retailers throughout the country that still stock them.
We've recently been contacted by a JB Hifi team member who states that customers can still order the CD singles in-store, but that they're no longer stocked on the shelves.
In the meantime, if you've seen latest release CD singles in a music store or department store near you, we'd love to hear about it, particularly if you're in Victoria, Western Australia or Queensland (lists for there are a bit light on the ground, you see). Simply click on the CD Single Stockists link in the right hand column (or click HERE). Click on the 'comments' section on that page and let us know.
We're continuing to update it whenever information comes to hand.
You're ace - thankyou.

Summadayze Perth kicks off on January 03 at the Supreme Court Gardens and the Esplanade. Guests include Carl Cox, The Presets, Sharam, Roger Sanchez, 2ManyDJs, LCD Soundsystem, Josh Wink, Mark Knight, Tom Novy, Shapeshifters, Sebastien Leger, The Ian Carey Project, Krafty Kuts and many more.
The Sydney event will bring Home Nightclub to life with Sharam, Eddie Halliwell, Tom Novy, Shapeshifters, Josh Wink, Don Diablo and more, all rocking the dancefloor for ten massive hours.

EXCITED? US?

So Australian radio thinks that Take That is poison. But you'll hear nothing but praise from us here on auspOp (apart from that whole last single in three parts only being available to UK residents thing, the bastards). Anyways, thankfully this little release will be available to all of us - and it's out at the end of November.
Take That will release their 'Circus' live DVD in the UK on November 23 and will follow it up one week later with this live double album 'The Greatest Day' released the week after.
Fans who sign up to the band's MAILING LIST will also have the opportunity to get their hands on a fan-only limited edition release in the months ahead. No word yet on an Aussie release for any of these, but the whole thing looked pretty spectacular (below).

WHITLEY'S BACK

Aussie singer-songwriter Whitley found himself a rather large legion of fans with his debut album 'The Submarine' a couple of years back. But now, after being holed up in what the press release suggests is a "ramshackle studio at the Victorian coast", Whitley has emerged presumably firstly for a breath of fresh air and secondly armed with a new album. 'Go Forth, Find Mammoth' will be that album.
Fans will be treated to the first slice of the album on October 09, when lead single 'Head, First, Down' will be released digitally. From then, it's just a short three week wait for the album's release.
Punters will also be able to catch Whitley performing at a number of festivals across the summer, including the Peats Ridge Festival, Falls Festival and the Woodford Folk Festival.

PLAY D(EL)AY

Evermore's support on the European leg of Pink's 'Funhouse' tour has resulted in the postponement of a number of their headline shows across the country (original article HERE). But their absence from Aussie shores seems to have forced organisers of Wollongong's inaugural PlayDay Festival, set down for Saturday November 21, to postpone the event. We've been told an announcement is to be made this week, with a rescheduled event set down for 2010.
