CHART WATCH

Let's face it, last week's No.1 album sales were dire. Just 3600 copies for a No.1 album in Australia does not a happy music industry make. But this week, things are much healthier in the No.1 spot - more than seven times healthier to be exact, as Kings Of Leon debut light years ahead of their nearest competition. On the singles side of things, Bruno Mars has ascended to the No.1 spot this week - and that's where we begin this week's Chart Watch.

SINGLES : Bruno Mars has slowly but surely been chraming Australian audiences with his single 'Just The Way You Are' - and it's finally cracked the big time - hitting the No.1 position after nine weeks on the chart.
He sold another 21,020 copies of the single this week. And despite the official chart showing no accreditation for the single at this stage, it's already sold close to 120,000 copies all up and could break through the double platinum mark by this time next week.
Rihanna's still selling well in the No.2 position with 'Only Girl (In The World)' with 19,745 copies, Nelly's moving up the sales chart at No.3 with 'Just A Dream' (16,611 sales), with Pink falling to No.4 in her second week with 'Raise Your Glass' (15,776 sales).
Could that be? Is it? Yes - it's an Australian artist in the top ten!! Dance diva Zoe Badwi scores a top ten hit with her latest single 'Freefallin'. With another 9685 copies under the belt this week, it moves up nine spots to No.9.
Pitbull's new single also moves into the top ten - up six spots.
Far East Movement's single 'Like A G6' moves up 18 spots to No.15 and Short Stack moves back into the top 20 with their single 'Planets'.
Eminem rises another nine places with new single 'No Love', Adam Lambert's Aussie tour pays dividends with his three singles all moving up the charts this week - 'If I Had You' the highest placed at No.22.
The highest debut this week comes courtesy of Taylor Swift, who dropped another track from her forthcoming album 'Speak Now' to digital retail. 'Back To December' debuts at No.26 with 3948 first week sales. Last week's highlight track ('Speak Now') drops from No.20 to No.51.
Enrique Iglesias & Nicole Scherzinger are up to No.27, Paramore's 'The Only Exception' jumps again and Katy Perry's new single 'Firework' heads into the No.37 spot first week in with 2794 sales.
Angus & Julia Stone's 'Big Jet Plane' soars back into the top 50 at No.44, Swedish House Mafia hits the top half at No.49 with 'Miami 2 Ibiza' and the cast of Glee are back on the box - and back in the chart - at No.50 with 'Only The Good Die Young' (1926 sales).
Outside the 50, Sia's 'Clap Your Hands' races up to No.56 (just five shy of the single's original peak), Kanye's new single 'Runaway' leaps to No.58 and there's 'Something In The Water' for New Zealand songstress Brooke Fraser at No.59 (1673 sales).
The Aston Shuffle is in at No.67 with 'Your Love' (1401 sales), Train's 'Save Me, San Francisco' is up 21 spots to No.71, The Temper Trap's 'Fader' is in at No.75 (1219 sales) and Glee's version of 'Billionaire' is back in the chart mix at No.77 (1201 sales).
Jason Derulo drops in at No.97 with 'The Sky's The Limit' and 979 copies sold (spookily exactly the same number of copies his previous hit 'In My Head' sold in the No.96 position).

ALBUMS :On the albums side of the draw, there's not only light years between the sales of the No.1 album from last week to this week, but there's also light years between the No.1 debut and the No.2 debut on this week's chart.
Putting it plainly, Kings Of Leon shit it in this week, selling a very healthy 26,463 copies of their new LP 'Come Around Sundown' to debut at No.1.
John Farnham would have had a No.1 album had his LP dropped last week, with 6069 copies of 'Jack' waltzing out the stores in the past week. He's in at No.2.
Robbie Williams' best-of actually gains sales ground on last week's debut - up three spots to No.3 with another 3611 sales. Eminem rises slightly, while The Script drops three.
Adam Lambert's tour has paid off with his album sales too - the LP 'For Your Entertainment' is into the Aussie top ten for the very first time - and it hits the No.6 spot with 2932 sales.
Bruno Mars' debut LP 'Doo-Wops & Hooligans' is in at lucky No.7 with 2843 copies down and the best (the 'Very Very Best') of Crowded House misses the top ten by less than 450 copies - in at No.11 with 2109 sales.
Brooke Fraser's album 'Flags' drops ten places to No.13, but last week's No.1 (Bring Me The Horizon's 'There Is A Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let's Keep It A Secret') drops all the way down to No.20.
Aussie singer Mirusia, who accompanies Andre Rieu on his global tours, is up 28 places to No.17 with her album 'Always & Forever'.
Metallica's eponymous LP is back in the top 50 - at No.35, piggy-backed by the previous Kings Of Leon LP, while Slash's album re-emerges further down at No.39. Powderfinger and Taylor Swift also re-appear.
Outside the top 50, Sia is on the march again (up 15 spots to No.52), so too Lil Wayne (up 31 spots to No.61) and Ou Est Le Swimming Pool (in the other direction, however - down 36 spots to No.63).
Ronan Keating's '10 Years Of Hits' is in at No.66 (625 sales), Paris Wells' new album 'Various Small Fires' is in at No.75 (561 sales), The Beatles '1967-1970' re-issue comes in at No.76 (554 sales) and All That Remains is in at No.90 (482 copies).
Boyzone's album plummets from No.34 to No.91 post-X Factor performance, U2's 'U218 Singles' comes in at No.97 (468 copies) and The Beatles '1962-1966' re-issue comes in at No.99 (464 copies).

Hey A1,

Not sure what you're asking about Ke$ha there.
But Yes, Adrian Lux is still in the top 100 - he's actually moved up nine spots this week to No.40!

Hey Anonymous #2,

We answered the Scarlett Belle 'total sales' question under the comments in last week's Chart Watch and have placed 'Freak Tonight' in the regulars section here.

Hey Anonymous #3,

'There Is A Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let's Keep It A Secret' sold less than half what it did last week, but it dropped 19 spots.
This week it was another 1461 copies.

Could you add Jessica Mauboy sales to your regular list? Also, how many copies of Get 'em Girls were sold?

Also, since Saturday Night apparently went to radio today, do you have the track yet?

Aden said...

could we have a Kesha lsit?

i think he means if he would liike to put Ke$ha in the aria regulars.

Hi! Do you have any idea of the total sales of Alexandra Burke's 'All Night Long'? Also, do you know when 'Start Without You' and Alex Gaudino's 'I'm In Love' will be added to iTunes?

Thanks for doing such a great job!

Anonymous said...

Hi !

Do you have total sales of Radioactive (Kings Of Leon), Clap Your Hands & We Are Born (Sia) ?

Thanks a lot for your great job ;-)

Anonymous #2 - how on Earth is is ARIA's fault? All they do is report the sales - they don't make them up. It would be like complaining to the Olympic Committee that the Gold medallist in the 100m in 2008 didn't have to run as fast as the Gold medallist in the 2004 Olympics! The charts are a weekly race, and the winner is the artist that sells the most copies in that particular week. The actual figure is irrelevant in terms of the charts.

auspOp said...

Hey Anonymous,

We suppose Jess would be a perfect fit for the regulars list - as she has been featured on there before.
We might drop Black Eyed Peas next week and get Jess on there instead.
This week, 'Get Em Girls' sold 4057 copies.

The auspOp team

auspOp said...

Hey Aden,

If we take Black Eyed Peas off the regulars list next week, we'll include both Kesha and Jess Mauboy.

Hey Anonymous,

RE: Alexandra Burke - she didn't spent too long in the ARIA top 100, so we'd only be guessing at total sales figures for her single.
As for 'Start Without You' - it's not even been sent to radio in this country yet.
Alex Gaudino's track is due at digital retail on Friday November 05 (a stupid move 'cause it's been out in Europe for months).

@anon #2

The ARIA charts rank releases on how well they sold that week. They are actually very good at doing that.

Certifications (Gold/Platinum) are only allocated to records that have hit certain figures.

Hi AuspOp!

May I have this week's sales figures for the following albums:

Kasey Chambers - Little Bird
Train - Save Me, San Francisco
Disturbed - Asylum
Metallica - Metallica
30 Seconds To Mars - This Is War
Rihanna - Rated R

Thanks in advance

auspOp said...

Hey Innocent Eyes,

Our apologies - for some reason your comment was one of two caught up in our spam box.

Kasey Chambers - Little Bird (1917)
Train - Save Me, San Francisco (1254)
Disturbed - Asylum (1021)
Metallica - Metallica (887)
30 Seconds To Mars - This Is War (834)
Rihanna - Rated R (722)

Hey Anonymous,

Kings Of Leon's 'Radioactive' has sold 18,867 copies since its debut.

It's hard to give full sales figures for Sia, however, as she's been in and out of the top 100.

AuspOp.,Can you please post Michael Jackson's album sales..,I think his album "Essential" is still charting within top 100.

auspOp said...

Hey Anonymous,

There's no Michael Jackson in the top 100 singles or albums chart anymore.
He completely disappeared from both lists last week, marking the first time he'd not been in the charts since his death.
