Early noughties popsters Bachelor Girl (yes, them of 'Buses And Trains' fame) are back with a new best-of and three very special one-off live shows, kicking off this weekend. In our first ever auspOp Q&A, we ask singer Tania Doko what she and bandmate James Roche have been up to in the meantime, about the new best of and what fans can expect from the live shows.
Q : Tania, it's been eight years since we saw the tail end of Bachelor Girl. Why did you say 'goodbye' in the first place?
Truth is we got the twelve year itch! James and I were still the best of mates when we parted, and really felt the need to pursue other musical endeavours overseas. James eloped and moved to London. I've been jumping from Los Angeles to Stockholm writing for outside artists and seeing the world in between.
Q : Why has now been the right time to release a greatest hits package?
Having space from a project that was your entire life can be a beautiful thing. For the last 7 years, James and I haven't both been in Oz for more than 5 minutes at a time (!) so pragmatically it just worked in 2011. The fact that we produced an entire third album (never released) was really the icing on the cake giving us extra reason to release a true compilation of 3 records and an even greater excuse to get back on the road. Besides, I think people are appreciating 90s pop in amongst all the urban doof on commerical radio, so hopefully we'll be a breath of fresh air.
Q : What have you and James been up to in between time?
James took a break from pop music whilst in London and produced docos for the BBC and film scored. I created an electro/rock project called SHE SAID YES, releasing an EP and enjoyed supports with Darren Hayes and the Potbelleez. I've also taken up song writing for & with outside artists including the Veronicas, Kelly Clarkson, Ricki Lee, German X Factor winner 2010 Edita, a song on the Disney feature movie 'Step Up 3' and worked with international heavyweight producers including Jorgen Eloffson (Britney, Leona Lewis) & Niclas Kings (Nervo, Kylie Minogue). Straight after the tour I return to Sweden to work on a solo project, and James will join me with his family to work on potential future Bachelor Girl material as well as material for outside artists.
Q : You've recently worked with Taylor Dayne too?
What a blast and a great chick! 'Tell It To My Heart' was one of my high school favourite tunes. I also used to serenade my friends on the piano with Taylor's "Love Will Lead You Back". Two of my favourite Swedish writers/producers penned & produced 'Floor On Fire' with me (including vocals from yours truly) and this will be Taylor's second single from her forthcoming greatest hits album.
Q : How did you choose the songs which would make it onto the best-of?
It wasn't easy! We have squillions of tunes that were never released. In the end we chose the tunes we felt were the most immediate and in the typical spirit of Bachelor Girl to fit the greatest hits vibe. 'Radio' is four on the floor feel good pop/rock, 'To Whom It May Concern' is a love letter to the future love of your life (apt for a bachelor girl), 'No Ordinary Day' - co written with one of our biggest contributors Jack Jones, 'We're A Natural' showing off the Bachelor Girl organic spiritual side, written by James in Byron Bay when he was going through a particularly hippy phase.
Q : What happened to your (unreleased) third album?
Well it's been collecting dust, til now! That third album, 'Beautifully Wrong' will be released on iTunes soon, and available at our gigs as of this week!!!
Q : You've also decided to get together for three live shows. What can we expect to hear?
'Loved and Lost' songs of course. You'll hear us rock out, pop out, get intimate, show off our extraordinary band, and give you a cinematic experience with visuals created by James, yet another one of his many talents. Hope to see y'all at a show this May/June. It'll be a unique and special tour after such a long hiatus.
